81-Year-Old Garwood Woman Fatally Hit By Car While Crossing Road

Catherine Flint was found by police lying face down in the road on Walnut Street​ near the intersection of Second Avenue on Wednesday night.

GARWOOD, NJ — An 81-year-old woman from Garwood was fatally hit by a car while crossing the street on Wednesday night, according to police.

At around 6:15 p.m., a Ford Explorer driven by a 61-year-old woman from Westfield was heading southbound on Walnut Street when she hit Catherine Flint on Walnut Street near the intersection of Second Avenue, said Garwood Police Chief James Wright.

Officers and the Garwood First Aid Squad tried to help Flint, but she was later pronounced dead at the scene, said Wright.

The driver was in the process of calling 911 when police arrived and remained on the scene.

"She is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation," said Wright. "The preliminary investigation suggests that neither speed nor alcohol were contributing factors."
