CLARK, NJ — Clark residents are being warned after a skunk tested positive for rabies and came into direct contact with two dogs.
The incident occurred on Prospect Street, according to a warning from the Clark Township Health Department.
Residents who see an animal acting strangely should stay away and call the Clark Township Police Department or Health Department.
Anyone bitten or scratched by a wild or stray animal should wash the area with soap and water and immediately seek medical attention, the township said. Pets that are bitten or scratched should be taken promptly to a veterinarian.
The township also said rabies is preventable with prompt medical attention.
Pet owners are also urged to keep rabies vaccinations current and supervise pets to prevent contact with wild animals.
The Clark case comes amid other recent skunk sightings and rabies concerns around New Jersey. Patch previously reported on a skunk caught on video roaming the Hoboken waterfront in September, while a separate skunk in New Brunswick tested positive for rabies that month.
