Man Who Barricaded Himself In Custody: Police

Breaking: Residents were evacuated from the first floor and neighboring houses. The suspect is believed to be armed, police report.

LINDEN, NJ — A man who barricaded himself and was believed to be armed has been arrested as of 2:36 p.m. on Sunday.

The situation began at the Shoprite on W. Edgar Rd in Linden, but the details of what happened there are still under investigation, Linden Police report.

A pursuit began following the incident where a man a vehicle crashed at the intersection Route 1 and S. Park Ave. and then fled and entered a home in the the 600 block of S. Park Avenue on Sunday morning, police report.

No one was injured in the crash.

Although residents were evacuated from the first floor and neighboring houses, police say it is unclear at this point if he knew the residents. The suspect is believed to be armed, police report.

S. Park Ave was closed at 10:55 a.m. and remains closed as of 5 p.m. between Route 1 and Grier Ave for police clean up.

Union County SWAT was on scene during the standoff.
