Postpartum Depression Information Cards Available Throughout Union County
The Department of Health and Senior Services will distribute palm cards at various locations in Union County.
The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services is initiating a new program that aims to aid new mothers who may be suffering from postpartum depression. The NJDHSS will be distributing informational palm cards containing the signs of postpartum at various locations throughout Union County.
Postpartum depression is a form of depression that affects women following childbirth. Any woman who has recently had a baby, ended a pregnancy, or who has stopped breast-feeding can be affected by thedisorder. Many mothers who suffer from postpartum depression are unable to recognize the condition’s symptoms, or are unaware of resources that can help. In New Jersey alone, between 11,000 and 16,000 women suffer from postpartum depression every year.
The condition came into the public awareness largely due to the efforts of former New Jersey First Lady Mary Jo Codey, a PPD survivor. Codey urged women to seek help if they experienced lingering feelings of depression and sadness following birth of their child. Since then, New Jersey has become a leader in the developing resources to help women with PPD and other perinatal mood disorders. In 2005, the NJDHSS launched its Speak Up When You’re Downcampaign to educate women and families about the disorder, and connect them with means of support.

The Speak Up When You’re Down informational palm cards are a new aspect of the program. The cards, available in both English and Spanish, contain common signs of the condition, such as crying, feelings of hopelessness, guilt or worthlessness, and a lack of interest in family and friends. In addition, the card lists resources that can answer any questions about perinatal mood disorders, including the toll-free 24 hour NJDHSS’ statewide Family Helpline and the official Speak Up When You’re Down website. The cards can be picked up in supermarkets, community centers, daycares and churches throughout Union County.
