Shirking Responsibility

Councilwoman Salmon's Missed Opportunity

In public service, there are difficult moments that demand our elected officials rise to the occasion and make the necessary decisions for the benefit of the community. Unfortunately, Councilwoman Salmon's recent vote of “no” against hiring seasonal workers for the DPW exemplifies a troubling relinquishment of this responsibility. Her refusal highlights a failure to embrace the necessary compromise essential for effective governance.

As the Finance Chair, I am acutely aware of the challenges facing our departments. Staffing shortages, budget constraints, and the need for enhanced retention strategies are complex issues requiring nuanced solutions. Councilwoman Salmon is well-informed about the ongoing discussions and efforts to address these concerns. Despite this, she has chosen a path of obstruction rather than collaboration.

The decision to bring on seasonal workers was not made lightly. It was a strategic move to provide immediate and interim relief to the DPW which recently found itself down two workers that required worker’s compensation leave, while we continue to explore sustainable, long-term solutions. A seasonal worker is a temporary and a practical step toward alleviating current pressures and ensuring that our DPW services continue without interruption.

Councilwoman Salmon's stance, however, reflects a disregard for the process of government and the principles of compromise that underpin it. By insisting on an all-or-nothing approach, she is not only undermining the department's ability to function effectively but also demonstrating a lack of willingness to engage in the collaborative problem-solving that her role demands. Instead of trolling on Facebook, Councilwoman Salmon should spend more time learning how to collaborate and work constructively within the Council, as politically inconvenient as it might be.

Councilwoman Salmon’s actions to date have in fact been detrimental. Photo ops, manufactured narratives, and social media conflicts only hinder the department's progress. While she remains in denial about the harm she causes as a Councilwoman, I will work tirelessly to rise above that noise and do what is needed for the betterment of my community.

Also, let us not forget that when the world shut down during the pandemic, it was individuals like our DPW workers who kept the foundation of our town, and society, flourishing. We should never forget their contributions, I will always support them, and always recognize them as fundamental to our Borough. Councilwoman Salmon's refusal to support the hiring of seasonal workers as an interim and temporary solution is a stark reminder of what happens when personal agendas overshadow the collective needs of the community – including the needs of the DPW.

In these challenging times, our community deserves leaders who are willing to make tough, pragmatic decisions. Councilwoman Salmon’s recent vote is a disappointing departure from this standard, but it also serves as a call to action for all of us to recommit to the principles of effective, collaborative governance. Together, we can overcome obstacles and ensure that our community continues to thrive.
