The Beginning of Decay, White Spot Lesions
My last post regarding the affects of acidic, sugary and diets drink on our teeth was gruesome. The examples I showed are the extreme and while this does occur it is not what I usually see in my office. This week I will share with you what I do see most frequently as a result of acidic, sugary, and diet beverages and one other situationThe Photo shows multiple white areas near the gum line of the teeth. These areas are where the minerals that make up the enamel of our teeth have been dissolved away by the daily consumption of acidic, sugary, or diets beverages. Left untreated there will be decay. These are White Spot Lesions or WSL.
There is another time in which I find the white spots. It is when children, teens, and adults are not properly cleaning their teeth while they have braces. When dental plaque remains around the orthodontic hardware, allowing the dissolving of the minerals in enamel. This condition left untreated will lead to decay.
We can prevent White Spot Lesions and the decay that follows. As I spoke of before you can reduce or remove all of the acidic, sugary, and diet beverages. Proper tooth brushing and flossing and regular visits to your dentist. If the White Spot Lesions already exist make an appointment and we have painless treatment options to reverse the process that causes this.
