A month ago, I embarked on a mission in Garwood with the simple, yet profound aim of walking door-to-door, engaging with every resident willing to share their story. Today, I reflect on the incredible journey thus far, one that has not only brought me closer to the heartbeat of our community but has also reinforced the democratic spirit that makes our small town uniquely vibrant.
Over the past month, I have had the honor of meeting many of our residents, listening to their concerns, celebrating their joys, hearing their frustrations and helping to find solutions to their problems. This initiative has transcended mere conversation; it has been a profound exercise in community building and understanding.
Meeting wonderful community members has been another highlight. From the enthusiastic welcomes to the thoughtful discussions, each interaction has reinforced the sense of belonging and community spirit that defines Garwood. These exchanges have shown that despite our differences, our shared values and common goals create a solid foundation for mutual respect and cooperation.

I am immensely grateful for the assistance of my fellow council members who have joined me on these walks. Their support has been invaluable, and together, we have made a greater impact. However, I am still holding out hope that Councilwoman Salmon will join us soon. A bipartisan walk with her presence would further demonstrate our united commitment to the community and enhance the benefits of this initiative.
Furthermore, this initiative has been a celebration of our democratic norms. At its core, democracy is about more than just voting; it’s about participation, dialogue, and the collective pursuit of the common good. By engaging directly with residents, we are practicing democracy in its purest form. We are listening, responding, and, most importantly, valuing each voice in our community.

Initially, I hoped to complete my walks by Memorial Day weekend, but the overwhelming response and the number of people I've met have pleasantly extended my timeline. With my daughter due to arrive on July 20th, my new goal is to finish this initiative before she is born. If not, I am fully prepared to continue my walks with her, strapped to my chest, embodying the very spirit of community and future we strive to nurture in Garwood.
As I reflect on the past month, I am filled with pride and gratitude. I am proud of what we have achieved together and grateful for the openness and warmth of our community. This journey has not only deepened my appreciation for Garwood but has also reaffirmed my belief in the power of grassroots initiatives to foster unity and understanding.
In conclusion, the ‘Walking Garwood’ initiative is more than just a series of conversations; it is a powerful affirmation of our community’s strength and resilience. It is a testament to the fact that even in a small corner of the nation, we can make a significant impact on enhancing democratic norms and fostering a spirit of community. Here’s to many more walks, many more stories, and continued progress in our beloved town.
