Why Clifton Residents Protested at Stop & Shop on Sunday
Neighbors rally outside Kingsland Road Stop & Shop, urging the grocer to honor its cage-free egg commitment.
On Sunday afternoon, Clifton neighbors protested outside the Stop & Shop on Kingsland Road—the grocery store best known for its cameo in Happy Gilmore. We called on Stop & Shop and its parent company, Ahold Delhaize, to finally follow through on a promise they made back in 2016: to end the use of cruel cage systems for egg-laying hens and sell 100% cage-free eggs by 2025.
That deadline has now arrived, but the company hasn’t delivered. Instead, they’re still selling eggs from hens packed into cages so small they can’t spread their wings.
Local shoppers don’t want their money supporting cruelty. Caged hens live in spaces so tight they can’t spread their wings, and these conditions create serious animal welfare and public health risks.
We’re urging Stop & Shop to:
- End cages in their supply chain
- Publish a clear, time-bound plan
- Be transparent and honest with customers about their progress
Our message is simple: It’s time for Stop & Shop and Ahold Delhaize to follow through on their promise!
