Collingswood Commissioners' Candidate Hugh McGuire's Third Blog: Education and PILOTS

Hugh talks of PILOTS and their effect on the school tax and education.

Here we are two weeks out from the election. I am going to talk today about some things that are near and dear to my heart: The schools and the negative effect that the PILOT programs have.

Currently Collingswood Borough has several large properties that have PILOT programs or tax abatements. The last being 2 months ago, the beautiful Old Zane School on Haddon Avenue sold by the town at 1/3rd of its assessed value and given a 10-year tax abatement.

Most homeowners and property owners pay property tax in our town. A PILOT is a Tax Abatement. When a Tax Abatement is given, no money from those properties goes to school tax. Continued redevelopment at the cost of our schools is senseless and out of touch. Our town is better than that and businesses can afford to pay the same in taxes that we do!
