Collingswood Tightens Emergency Storm Plans
Borough officials met to sharpen emergency preparedness plans in light of the impending Hurricane Irene.

Borough officials met Friday morning to tighten emergency storm plans in proactive preparation for this weekend's hurricane forecast.

Both school buildings will be open if necessary for use by those dwelling in flood-prone areas of the borough.Â
Borough officials are asking residents who live in flood-prone areas, or who have medical conditions that may require evacuation, to make their contingency plans now—before the hurricane hits.Â

If evacuation is necessary this weekend, borough officials say residents should shut off all utilities before leaving their homes.Â
Borough officials expect this weekend will bring power outages and severe flooding to Collingswood.Â
All residents should review this quick list of hurricane tips:
- Remove all cars from the street
- Do not use generators indoors (carbon monoxide hazard)
- Secure all fuel sources safely
- Tie down any outdoor equipment, like trash cans, flags, umbrellas, lawn furniture, construction supplies, and other items (to avoid injuries and damage caused by airborne items)
- Keep flashlights, additional batteries and emergency radios in a safe, easy-to-find place
- Prepare for possible extended power outages
- Prepare for possible falling trees and wires
- Discuss emergency and evacuation plans with family members
- Prepare quantities of any necessary medications to take if evacuation is required
