Colonial Conference Football Wrap-Up

Woodbury 42, Collingswood 7

It was the Anthony Averett and Cameron Gamble show at Woodbury Saturday morning, as the two scored three touchdowns alone and combined on a fourth in a 42-7 shellacking of Collingswood in the two teams’ Colonial Conference opener.

The Thundering Herd built a lead in a hurry, getting a 50-yard rushing touchdown from Alabama-bound Averett and a 20-yard return on a blocked punt by Gamble. After a Dwuan Martin three-yard TD, the Herd led 22-0 after just the first quarter.

They’d stretch that to 36-7 at halftime on an Averett-to-Gamble touchdown pass, and Averett’s 55-yard punt return in the third quarter iced the game.

Martin finished with two touchdowns to complete the offense, and Woodbury’s Jamir Baston notched eight tackles and two sacks to lead the defense.

Collingswood’s lone touchdown came on a 16-yard pass from Jordan Wallace to Donny Barr.

Haddon Heights 46, Gateway 0

The Garnets did all their damage in the first half behind a dominant passing performance by Dante Pinckney, who was 7-of-9 for 93 yards and three touchdowns.

Pinckney added 36 rushing yards to go with that, as Haddon Heights piled up 190 yards on the ground. Brandon Joyner (65 yards) and Brandon Smith (47 yards) carried the bulk of the load, but Heights also got 31 yards from Julian Faison and 11 yards from Khyleef Moore.

On the defensive side, Kevin Hall (nine tackles) and Dymelle Parker (six tackles) led the way for the Garnets.

Sterling 21, Haddon Township 3

The Knights took a 7-3 lead at halftime on a 56-yard interception return for a touchdown, but didn’t put it away until the fourth, when they scored 14 points, including a 54-yard run to put away Haddon Township.

The Hawks got a 38-yard field goal in the second quarter from Connor Wade, but couldn’t get anything else going offensively.

Audubon 22, Overbrook 14

The Green Wave made it five years in a row with a win to open the season, holding on to beat Overbrook at home.

Paulsboro 10, Haddonfield 0

For the last two years, the Colonial Conference has been about just two teams: West Deptford and Haddonfield.

Friday night, Paulsboro served notice this year will be different.

The Red Raiders shut out the Bulldawgs on the road, 10-0, behind a 10-yard touchdown run by Deshaun Burgess and a 37-yard field goal from Mike Maccarone.

West Deptford-Lindenwold Postponed Until Monday

A severe storm warning nixed the West Deptford-Lindenwold season opener, originally set for 6 p.m. Saturday.

The Eagles will have to wait two days to officially begin their defense, with the game now slated for 6 p.m. Monday.
