Off-Duty Cop From Camden County Wrestled Gun From Atlantic City Shooter: Police

Bellmawr Police Sgt. Christopher Cummings was off-duty, but close to the scene of the shooting at The Walk on Thursday.

An off-duty police officer from Camden County is being hailed as a hero after he disarmed a Somers Point man who fatally shot another man at The Walk in Atlantic City before he turned the gun on himself on Thursday.

Bellmawr Police Sgt. Christopher Cummings was off-duty, but close to the scene, the police department said in a Facebook post on Friday. He immediately attempted to disarm 55-year-old Luis Maisonet.

“He managed to wrestle the firearm from the gunman before he could inflict any further harm upon himself or anyone else and the suspect was then taken into custody,” police said in the post. “Great job on your courageous actions Sgt. Cummings.”
