The All Consuming Beast

Last night I saw the cats , all four of them laying in a sort of circle head to head it looked as if they were having a conversation. In my mind I thought it went something like this. 

To Jinx the newest member of our household. They say " We feel it is time to talk to you about the beast".

Jinx: "Beast, what of this beast? I see no beast ."

Binx: "Rocky! ..let Rocky tell him...he is the eldest and have lived here the most, for he hath known of  the beast the longest."

Rocky: "Alright then I shall tell you . You see , all is not as you think here in this place. Yes I know....you are warm and sound and have food to eat and a safe place to sleep. And the Uprights pet you and speak in the tongue we only sometimes understand.  Believe me when I tell you this, we are all grateful for their love and care . They saved us all from a life of captivity so I am honestly grateful. And without them we would never eat treats ".

Binx: Grateful, we are all very grateful, I love the Uprights, they saved me from a small shiny  silver colored box with bars for windows .I was sick and yet they did not care . They took me to this place and they gave me small drops of liquid which made me feel better and when I was not so good they put me in a green box with a fence for a door and then into the big shiny red thing.  The very same one you see them enter when they leave here as we all peer out of the clear walls ....the one with the round black things that turn and turn and turn .....and they rolled over the earth to other places and  to see that man who pinched my bottom, which  hurt at first but then it  made me feel even better.  They are sweet and hold me close and I love them so...........and they control  the treats " 

Rocky: "Enough Binx!! ,You are a sentimental fool who loveth all living things .And they loveth you back .  Let me  finish he must be warned !   Tis true they are good Uprights , true enough. And I love them dearly also ,but they are dangerous and unpredictable at times too. And it is they who hold the power of the beast .  And when they unleash him you will feel the wrath.  "

Jinx : "But I know they are good and kind and they spared me from a life of strife and took me in where it is warm and loving and now you warn me of such a monster as this. I think you jest ,I see no beast where doth he reside? " If there be such a beast why have I not seen him to make himself known?"

Rocky: "Ahhhhh , well this is what the Uprights do. They lull you into thinking you are safe. They cuddle you and feed you and talk to you. It gives us all a  sense of security, to think we are so cared for.  But do not let this fool you . For when the beast doth come it is by their own hand . They guide him to all of the places we love . And this will occur when you least expect it. While you may be asleep or looking out at the flying  or creeping things." 

Jinx: "And how am I to know this beast when I do  see him"?  "And what am I to do when he does come?"

Salem: "I will tell you ,  I do run so fast he cannot catch me , and I taunt him, I dart here and there , but he is a lumbering monster and cannot keep time with me. My wiles are too good for him. And I have watched from the distance , cowering  under one of those big soft beds they sit on to watch the light box , when they are not paying attention to us . This is how I avoid him. And yet I have seen him devour many things. Once after the Upright who is always here with us...was making his way through,  pushing the monster ahead of him , I saw with mine own eyes this gargantuan eat my tiny colorful mouse, the one who squeeked which I did love sooooo much . And  then in one fell swoop he turned his rage and insatiable hunger to my beautiful shiny round sparkly thing , the one that made such lovely noise as it raced across the floors, inhaling it never to be seen again. My sadness was imeasurable ."    

Rocky : " Salem is right ,tis true what he sayeth  for I have seen it devour my favorite things with mine own eyes , but now let me continue lest it come whilst we speak !   You will know this beast by the sound he doth make. A terrible sound

Binx and Salem  " Terrible , we say !" 

Rocky " It is like a hundred,  no a thousand roars of our own kind . Like those of us , the big ones who still live in the jungles ! It will come from the room where we all use the boxes they set out for us ..the ones filled with smelly grains ,where we evaculate our bowels and bladders .The very ones that they are so fascinated by and like to play in ..sifting our droppings into the crinkly noisy  things they call bags, those that  we love to chew and rip apart , the ones they hold in high regard. .   The beast will ROAR  his way out of that room.  And we must all scatter and run and hide until he has had his fill.  He is a vicious relentless creature who consumes everything in his path.  He hath a large foot, only one ,  which shines like the light of the sun, and  a large belly , where you will end up I tell you ,if you doth fall into his way .  His tail covers the earth it is so long and purest white . This tail the uprights take and fix to one of those boxes which lay low on the wall, the very ones they scream out to us to "get away from that" .  He is not blue nor is he red this creature ...he is a combination of the two. The color they see as Purple .  And when you conceal yourself and feel you are most safe.....he will  extend one very long arm and try and kill you where you lay.    

The Uprights will move with him and guide him to all of the places we feel safe in.  No corner of this place will be a haven, so you must go where he is not  . They will sing merrily while the beast eats and  does his dirty work , unaware that we can hear them over his roar.  This be the time they hear no other .   Beware this beast, it means your life ! "

Jinx: " Well now I am frightened and sorry I have come into this place ! Perhaps I should make my way out again when they open a the big wooden flap" 

Rocky :" No no no do no such thing  , for that would be stupid ....it is much more dangerous out there where we must fight for every drop of food , and there will be no treats ! They do not guide to chase us , they guide him  to the places we sit in and to the places we walk on....they want our fur , they are trying to capture our fur not kill us . They are interested in our fur, it collects in the belly of the beast . They themselves , mean us no harm . But if you are not careful you will get caught up too, so this is why we must warn you ."

Jinx..."Well then , No dummy am I , consider me warned I shall run and hide with you all and he shall never catch me for I am quick and stealthy ...and now, my friends....what shall I call this beast you talk of in such fear  Doth he have a name ? Or is he just THE BEAST?"

Rocky, Binx and Salem all answer in unison : " Indeed , he doth have a name .....they call him  Dyson !"
