Breaking Bad: 'Face Off' Season Finale Review + Thoughts On The Season

Breaking Bad ended it's amazing fourth season on Sunday.

Wow. I guess the phrase face off had 2 meanings here. I didn't think Gus was going to see another day the way this season has been shaping up, but I really didn't see it ending like that. When he walked out and adjusted his tie I thought for a second he was going to make it out of there alive, but it was not to be. At least he went out looking like the 2011 version of the Terminator.

I wish it would have been directly at the hands of Walt but that might have been a little cliche and unrealistic, but Walt outsmarting him was a great ending to their story. That last shot of the episode was really good and just as Bryan Cranston had described in an interview this past week. He explained how you would know exactly what is was if you had been paying attention, and it was obvious right when they started the shot. It can only mean one thing, that Walt was responsible for the attempted killing of Brock, which was pretty obvious by the look on his face when Jesse told him he was going to pull through.

I don't know when all these stunts Walt is pulling behind Jesse's back (like this one and the time when he let Jane die right in front of him while Jesse was sleeping and let Jesse take the blame for it) are going to catch up with him. I could imagine if Walt ever meets his demise before the show is over, it will be because of those actions. Walter White has fallen a long long way to the point where he would try to murder a child to win a battle against someone else, but he finally turned into Scarface like the writers wanted him to.

It has been another great season of Breaking Bad with yet another awesome ending that surely has everyone anticipating next season like it's going to start next week. Not only was this an acting showcase for all involved, but the stories this year were always thrilling and keeping you on the edge of your seat. It was an absolute master class in TV show production, again. I finally got to watch the season in HD as it was happening (thanks, DirecTV) instead of buying the Blu Ray after it was released and it was just way better because the show always looks stunning with awesome shots by director of photography Michael Slovis. It's a shame that Giancarlo Esposito won't be with the show anymore but what a great run, he was fantastic every single chance he got to show it. As for the future of the show, it is well known there is only 16 episodes left so it will be interesting as to how they divide those up between two seasons. There definitely won't be a 16-episode season so the logical way is eight and eight, but 10 and six isn't out of the question. I don't care if they do one episode for the next 16 years, they would find a way to make it the best episode of TV every year.
