Cranford High School will host Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation Poet Catherine Doty.
On April 24, Cranford High School will host Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation poet Catherine Doty. The Foundation sponsors visits by poets as part of its Poetry in the Schools Program. Sara Sherman, who teaches English and Creative Writing at Cranford High School, is coordinating the program.
Catherine Doty is the author of a book of poems, Momentum (CavanKerry Press), and a collection of cartoons, Just Kidding (Avocet Press). Her work has appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies, among them Garrison Keillor’s More Good Poems for Hard Times and Billy Collins’ 180 More: Extraordinary Poems for Every Day. She is the recipient of the 2003 Marjorie J. Wilson Award, an Academy of American Poets Prize, and fellowships from the National Endowment of the Arts, the NJ State Council on the Arts, and the New York Foundation for the Arts.

Ms. Doty will read her poetry to groups of students during the course of the day. Students have prepared for her visit by reading and discussing samples of her work in their English and Creative Writing classes. Additionally, the CHS University Writers Group celebrated National Poetry Month with the annual CHS Poetry Palooza, a reading of student work performed by the poets and members of the Theatre Arts classes.
