Cranford Art Studio Raises $25K For Puerto Rico Relief Effort

Tammie Ramos-Crispino, owner of Fire Me Up! Studio in Cranford, started the fundraiser, which included 26 studios across the nation.

CRANFORD, NJ — Close to $25,000 was raised for Hurricane Maria Relief efforts in Puerto Rico thanks to Tammie Ramos-Crispino, owner of Fire Me Up! Studio in Cranford.

Ramos-Crispino started the effort, which ended up spreading to include 26 independent art and pottery studios across the nation.

The event was held on Oct. 24 simultaneously as hundreds of participants painted a canvas piece based off one of Puerto Rico’s most famous tourist landmarks, La Puerta de La Bandera, located on Calle San José in Old San Juan.

Proceeds from the event will go to the non-for profit, Harimau Conservation and their Rayo De Luna initiative. Harimau Conservation is an organization founded and based in Puerto Rico that helps to empower communities through conservation and education.

“It is because of that trust you have put in us that we will work even harder. We believe in reconstructing a new sustainable Puerto Rico. You have validated our efforts," Harimau Conservation founder Joaquín Alonso said in response to the success of the fundraiser.

Forty-five days after Hurricane Maria made landfall on the island there are still many Puerto Ricans without electricity or access to water. As one of its first directives, Harimau will begin deployment of water filtration systems this week, giving many communities access to much needed clean water. In addition to providing filters, they will also distribute solar lamps, solar chargers, teach environmental conservation and yoga therapy.
