Cranford Government Resets For 2019 Wednesday

Reorganization meeting will see a new for mayor, deputy mayor sworn in.

CRANFORD, NJ - Just a day into 2019 and the Cranford Township Committee is poised to set the table for the new year on Wednesday night.

The first meeting of the governing body in 2019 is set to begin at 6 p.m. and will be presided over by Municipal Clerk Patricia Donahue. Thomas Hannen will be sworn in for another term as a member of the township committee after and invocation to be led by Rev. Fr. Thomas Quinn of St. Michael Church and the Flag Salute led by the Police and Fire Honorary Color Guard.

After Hannen received his certificate of election the election of the chairman will be held and Patrick Giblin is expected to earn the nod for 2019. In the township form of government, a mayor is not directly elected. Voters elect the township committee comprising three or five members in staggered, three-year terms. The township committee elects the mayor, or chairman, for a one-year term. The mayor serves as chair of the township committee and has powers vested in the mayor’s office by general law.

After he is sworn in, Giblin is expected to make a statement after which the election and swearing in of the vice chairman, or deputy mayor, will take place. For 2019 that is expected to be Ann Dooley.

After that swearing in, the reconstituted governing body will appoint residents to various committees and commissions for 2019.
