Cranford Cops Confront 'Alarming' Social Media Commenter
Officials say the schools were never in any danger, but there will be an increased police presence throughout the district.
CRANFORD, NJ - The person who made the social media comments that prompted an increase in police presence has been identified, confronted and charges may be pending, according to officials.
In a message sent out to the community Executive Assistant to the Superintendent said Michele Cammarata a Cranford High School student received a "non-specific comment" via SnapChat. Cammarata said it did not involve a threat to any of the schools but that the school immediately reported the incident to the Cranford Police Department and they are actively investigating and working with the legal team at SnapChat and other social media providers to determine the source of the comment.
According to Superintendent Scott Rubin, the Police Department investigated the issue and were able to identify, isolate, and confront the individual responsible for the alarming comment while taking exhaustive precautions to ensure that this individual is not a threat to others, the school or the community. The Police Department continues to work in conjunction with the Union County Prosecutor's Office to determine if there will be charges filed in response to this incident, Rubin said.
