Cranford Teens Set Out To Break Guinness World Record

On Thursday, approximately 20,000 cans of vegetables will be dropped off at the Cranford Community Center, where local teens will begin the process of preparing to break a Guinness World Record, while helping victims of Superstorm Sandy.

The Cranford Teen Advisory Board has set out to collect 25 thousand cans of food for those effected by Superstorm Sandy and donate them to NJ Food Bank, Cranford Family Care and the Salvation Army Plainfield Corps. Prior to their donation, however, the teens plan to break a Guinness World record by building the world's largest canned food pyramid, according to a press release from the Teen Advisory Board.

"ShopRite's charitable arm, Partners in Caring, has come forward and is donating 20,000 cans of vegetables to help the teens cause," the press release states.

On May 4, beginning at 8 a.m., members of The Cranford Teen Advisory Board will join other local organizations at the Cranford Community Center on Walnut Avenue in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record.

"The canned food pyramid will have more than 25,000 cans and weigh nearly 12 tons," according to the press release. "The base layer will be 42 x 42 cans square and will contain 1,764 cans. the next layer will be 41 x 41 cans square progressing until the last layer of one can will top off the pyramid to break the record."

The Cranford Teen Advisory Board is a group of local teenage volunteers appointed by the Township Committee. The groups works in conjunction with the Cranford Department of Parks and Recreation to organize events for other local teens.
