Despite Rumors, Library Expansion On Track For Summer Reopening In Cranford

Officials addressed rumors about a stop-work order and confirmed the project remains on schedule for a summer reopening.

CRANFORD, NJ — The Cranford Public Library renovation and expansion remains on schedule for a summer reopening, according to township officials, who addressed recent community rumors suggesting the project had been halted.

The update was provided during the June 8 Township Committee meeting, where officials were asked about the status of the project and a reported state-level work action that had led to confusion among residents.

During public comment, resident Rita Lobruto asked for clarification on what she had heard about the project.

“I thought the Department of Labor had closed the library,” Lobruto said. “Is the construction still moving forward?”

Lobruto also said she hoped the expanded library would include more programming for children once it reopens, pointing to offerings at nearby libraries.

Commissioner Brian Andrews said the confusion stemmed from a misunderstanding about the scope of the state action.

“I think there was some confusion around this,” Andrews said, explaining that the issue involved a subcontractor working on the project, not the library renovation itself.

Andrews said the state action was directed at that subcontractor and its work, and that the subcontractor was removed from the job after the issue was identified.

“The work at the library didn't literally stop,” Andrews said. “There was a stop work order against the subcontractor and their work on the library… but it wasn't on the project itself.”

He added that the main contractor kept the project moving by using its own crews temporarily while bringing in a replacement subcontractor to complete the work.

Andrews also addressed Lobruto’s comments about programming, saying the expansion is expected to allow for more community offerings, particularly for children.

“I strongly agree on the programming,” Andrews said. “One of the reasons more programming couldn't take place in the past was a lack of space in the children's room.”

He said the redesigned library will include a larger children’s area and a new tween space, which he said will support expanded programming once the facility reopens.

“My hope is that this will unlock a lot of potential to do more programming specifically focused on children,” Andrews said.

The project is funded through a combination of state, township, and library resources and includes both expansion work and facility upgrades.

Officials said the library remains on track for a full reopening later this summer.
