Attracting Birds To Your Feeder

Participants at Attracting Birds to Your Feeder on February 18, will learn to identify birds that visit feeders and their food preferences. Complete feeder stations offer sunflower seed, suet, thistle and mixed seed. Each of the foods and how they are presented will encourage local and migrant species to visit your backyard. Holly Hoffman, former Director of Trailside Nature& Science Center in Mountainside, member of the Greater Watchung Nature Club and avid birder, will share these and other bird feeding tips with participants. The program is free and open to anyone 15 years or older.  Ms. Hoffman has been attracting a wide variety of species for many years to her own yard in Plainfield and last April was thrilled to have a western tananger visit for several weeks.  This was a very unusal sighting for a Western tananger, out of its normal range, which according to Hoffman, had not been sighted in New Jersey in April for over 40 years.

This program is made possible in part by a HEART GRANT (History, Education, Arts - Reaching Thousands) from the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs with support from Wild Birds Unlimited on Route 22 East, Scotch Plains. For: All ages Fee: Free (donations gladly accepted)Time: 7:30-8:30p.m. Class size is limited and preregistration is required:(908)709-7283 or in-person at the Cranford Recreation & Parks Department located at the Cranford Community Center at 220 Walnut Avenue, Cranford.
