Movie About a Zebra Who Longs to be a Racehorse to Screen in Nomahegan Park

The last in a series of 'Family Flix' films shown outdoors.

County residents are invited to kick back, relax and take in a movie at Nomahegan Park in Cranford on Aug. 24. The film "Racing Stripes" will screen as the last of a series of summer films shown in parks around Union County, according to a Board of Chosen Freeholders press release.

"Racing Stripes" is a 2005 Warner Brothers comedy, starring a zebra as the unlikely protagonist. Raised on a farm with racehorses, the zebra soon harbors aspirations to become one himself. A young girl, who also dreams of riding in the big-time horse races, becomes his jockey. The movie will screen outdoors and is free-of-charge, according to the press release.

Before the film begins, Watchung Stable staff members will take children on horse rides in the park beginning around 7:15 p.m.

"Bring a blanket or beach chair to claim your spot on the lawn or save a seat in the bleachers – either way, the early birds are sure to like the horses in the park before the movie," sad Freeholder Vice Chairman Deborah Scanlon in the press release, liaison to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.

The movie starts at dusk, but will be canceled if bad weather strikes, according to the press release. For more information, call the Union County Department of Parks and Community Renewal at 908-527-4900. For rain information in the parks call 908-558-4079 after 3 p.m.
