Foot Chase Leads To Arrest Of Alleged Bike Thief In Cranford

Breaking: A Roselle man was witnessed stealing a bicycle and chased down on foot by Cranford police before being arrested.

CRANFORD, NJ — A Roselle man was arrested following a foot chase for allegedly stealing a bike near the Southside Train Station in Cranford.

On Sept. 30, Kahsaun Bell, 19, was witnessed taking an unlocked bicycle from the front of a business across from the train station by the owner of a bike, police reported.

The victim alerted Officer Brian Lopez, who was patrolling the area.

Lopez spotted Bell riding the victim’s bicycle near the intersection of E. South Avenue and Burchfield Avenue. When Lopez ordered Bell to stop, he immediately fled on foot. Lopez chased Bell and arrested him a short time later.

“As we have seen an increase in bicycle thefts at the Train Station, patrols of this area have become a priority. These efforts undoubtedly led to an arrest and recovery of this bicycle,” states Cranford acting Police Chief Joseph VanBergen.

Bell was charged with one count of theft, one count resisting arrest, and subsequently released from custody pending an October appearance in Cranford Municipal Court.
