Gold Medal Tips for Running in the Winter

Here are a handful of tips to help make your run warmer, safer and more enjoyable.

Staying active in the winter can be a challenge – nonetheless venturing outside for a run. Whether you’re long distance training or just jogging for fun, here are a handful of tips to help make your run warmer, safer and more enjoyable.

Track the weather – Check the weather and schedule your runs for the warmer, sunnier times of the day.

  • Warm up before and after you run – Before you head out, get your blood flowing with a few jumping jacks or jogging down the stairs. And remember, your body cools down pretty quickly after a run, so you’ll want to head inside and change out of wet clothes as soon as possible.
  • Stay hydrated – Even though you may not feel thirsty, your body’s water still needs to be replenished in the winter months.
  • Be seen – Evenings grow dark quick. Wear reflectors or flashing lights so drivers can see you more easily
  • Cross-train – Vary your workouts with sprints, hills, long runs and interval training.
  • Run with a friend – Having a friend to chat with along the way can distract you from the cold and motivate you to finish your run.
  • Know when to run inside – The best way to keep warm while running in the winter is to take your training indoors on a treadmill.
  • Gear up – There are lots of accessories to consider for winter running. It’s best to consider warm socks and gloves, breathable clothing, a waterproof jacket and shoe spikes.
