Jersey Freeze: The Iconic Jersey Shore Ice Cream Legacy Expands Beyond Monmouth County

For nearly three-quarters of a century, Jersey Freeze has been more than just an ice cream shop—it's a beloved summertime institution where generations of families have created sweet memories. Founded in 1952 in Freehold Township, New Jersey, the business continues to thrive under new ownership while staying true to its roots of legendary soft serve, handcrafted shakes, Great American Food and community spirit.

A Sweet History with a Fresh Chapter

Jersey Freeze was founded in 1952 by the Blackmore family. When Jersey Freeze opened its doors, there was mainly ice cream being served in Freehold, NJ. By 1970s, the restaurant was a go-to spot for fast food and ice cream in the area.

Katie Dinonno started working at Jersey Freeze as a teen in high school and became a manager quickly after she was working there in 1990s. In 2014, Katie and Matt Cangialosi purchased the restaurant from Bruce Blackmore, who wanted to retire.​

Since 2014, Katie and Matt have been the owner/operators of the restaurant and Ice Cream Parlor. The owners have added on more menu items since then. Both owners continuously are giving back to the community.

In March 2020, Katie and Matt opened their second location at Bell Works in Holmdel, NJ.

In 2025 Katie and Matt Partnered up with Matthew Borowski to open Colts neck, NJ. The three of them will start franchising in 2026.

Rapid Expansion and Franchising Ambitions

As of mid-2026, Jersey Freeze operates multiple spots across Monmouth County, with new locations announced in Shrewsbury (a franchise run by local Freehold residents Dave Meisner, Pat Cabello, and Joe Miller) and Old Bridge in Middlesex County (slated for spring 2026 at 1447 Route 18). Plans include further New Jersey growth before a nationwide push, with a Florida location in Naples already in progress. 5 to 6 more slated to open in 2027
