Lecture on the Garibaldi Guard

Historian Mark Luongo will present a program on the origins of the 39th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment--also known as the Garibaldi Guard--and its participation in the Civil War. Mr. Luongo will discuss the involvement of immigrants in the war, the regiment's uniforms and equipment, their renegade colonel, and their heroic major. All are welcome. The program was arranged by the Cranford Historical Society and the Cranford Public Library. Part of the “Civil

War 150 Project," the program is presented by the Library of America in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, and is supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
