Step inside Bebe International and you’re tempted to let out a gasp when you see the beautiful clothes they have for girls and boys. Holiday dresses line the walls, along with winter coats for boys and girls, newborn coming home outfits, and baby gifts. These are not items you’re likely to find at a big box children’s store. Bebe was actually in Elizabeth for 25 years, and has been a part of Cranford’s downtown for 8 years. It was previously owned by Mari Sainz, but now has a new owner, Tamara Villagran.
Tamara used to frequently visit the store as a customer, and when she heard the owner was looking to retire she decided to make a career change. She knew that the store offered a loyal following, and that some customers have been shopping at Bebe for generations, due to its quality and specialty items. The store imports a lot of its merchandise from Europe, setting it apart from other children’s stores. It stocks popular brands like Luli & Me, Emile et Rose, and Carriage Boutiques.
Many customers come to the store for newborn gifts, such as blankets, knits, and take me home outfits. Communion and Christening outfits are also a big seller, as well as dresses for special events. Tamara feels that the one-on-one attention she’s able to offer, as well as customers’ ability to see the clothes in person, is one of the reasons people keep coming back. The uniqueness of her products leads to many grandparents and friends coming by to pick up something special.
