ABOUT SILHOUETTE ARTIST CINDI HARWOOD ROSE: Cindi, an art prodigy, started drawing portraits at 8 for profit, and by 16 she showed her portfolio to a Disneyland representative at Astroworld in Houston. They hired her immediately to do water colors and pastel portraits in the park. While taking a park tour, she noted that there were around 30 portrait artists but only one silhouette artist. She realized it was the better job. Being paid commission only, she asked to try it, although, she had only observed the silhouette artist doing 1 silhouette prior. They laughed since doing a detailed, authentic silhouette art profile, is something you can’t learn, and is much harder than drawing with a pen, no light or camera is used, it is miniature, normally no larger than 3 to 4 inches.

Cindi Harwood’s first try was so good, the other artist was fired on the spot and Cindi became Astroworld’s silhouette artist each summer, while in high school at Bellaire, in Houston. Not only that, the art manager, flew her to Disneyland to check out her skills summers and Christmas vacations. They were amazed, she out produced the artist they currently had in the park, her work was more detailed and accurate and not generic. She went on to cut silhouettes in college at University of Texas, Austin, for Disney in Houston and Los Angeles to earn her total degree in fine arts and communications/journalism, graduating with honors.

Upon graduation she went to work at Disneyworld in Florida. In the parks, she did many celebrities in person, Muhamed Ali, Sammy Davis, Liberace, Julie Andrews, Elvis Presley. After working for them, she found an agent, and authored a column in “Houston Magazine” Profile in Introspect. She would interview celebrities such as Mama Cass Elliot, Peter Fonda, and local news anchors and sports figures, cut their silhouettes and interview them. She found herself in demand world-wide, even being flown to England for the Europec, and doing a stint on BBC TV, and the Queen. She has silhouette Barbara Bush, and George W. Bush, Ashley Judd, Tony Bennett, in person and others. Cindi Harwood Rose, can do the interior details and groupings, not mastered by other silhouette artists who travel around the country, that Disneyland may not have hired.
