Sunday Morning Biblical History: Mold Remediation

How long do you think homeowners have worried about the growth of mold? Since the 1950s housing developments? Since pioneers built their own log cabins? Since the shacks contaminated with black plague?

If you answered any of the above, you would be wrong! Mold actually dates back to biblical days, in the book of Leviticus, which details (explicitly) what is to be done to mitigate a “spreading mold” or, worse, a “persistent defiling mold.”

The techniques have of course changed, but you’d be surprised how many small details have stayed the same in what we do in our mold remediation around Cranford, NJ.

The priest is to order the house to be emptied before he goes in to examine the mold, so that nothing in the house will be pronounced unclean.

We sure aren’t priests! But we make sure to clear contaminated areas so that we can contain the growth of the mold.

He is to examine the mold on the walls, and if it has greenish or reddish depressions that appear to be deeper than the surface of the wall, 38 the priest shall go out the doorway of the house and close it up for seven days

We don’t take chances in leaving mold for seven days: the faster we remove it, the better. Also, we have the mold remediation training to kill the source of the mold (water leaks, poor ventilation) rather than the visible surface of the stain, and this must be done quickly to prevent further growth.

The contaminated stones be torn out and thrown into an unclean place outside the town.

We remove contaminated sheet rock to a dumpster in the driveway!

Anyone who sleeps or eats in the house must wash their clothes.

We do this. Religiously!

Alas, our techniques part ways when the priest begins to purify the home with birds and cedar wood -- we’re more accustomed to completely drying out affected structures and applying mitigating agents! But it’s amazing how much the leaders of these ancient communities understood about the health dangers and cleansing agents available to save their homes from spreading molds.

Now, we’re grateful to have the tools and training to accomplish deep mold remediation and to quickly stop its growth at the source every time.
