Trinity Episcopal Church invites everyone to join us to celebrate Holy Week from Palm/Passion Sunday through Easter

Trinity Episcopal Church, 119 Forest Ave. Cranford, NJ invites everyone to join us in celebrating Holy Week this year. “Holy Week, from Palm/Passion Sunday through Easter, especially the Holy Triduum services of Maundy Thursday (the Last Supper), Good Friday, and the Paschal Vigil, encapsulate the heart of the Christian faith”, said The Reverend Andy Kruger, Trinity’s Rector. “We welcome everyone to worship with us at any or all of our services”, Father Andy continued.

The Holy Week service schedule is:

Palm Passion Sunday, April 10 @ 8 AM & 10 AM in the church and streamed online

Holy Week begins with the triumphant procession of the palms. Father Andy will demonstrate how to make a palm cross out of blessed palm leaves, bringing to life the transition experienced in the liturgy itself: the movement from triumphal procession to the passion of our Lord. Please bring a pair of scissors.

Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of Holy Week April 11, 12, 13 chanted Compline at 8 PM in the church and streamed online.

Come and soak up the beauty of the candle light and the peaceful cadences of the compline liturgy. Each night Father Andy will offer a brief Ignatian meditation to help us reflect back on the day that has passed. Musical preludes will be offered at each service.

Maundy Thursday (Triduum I), April 14 @ 7 PM in the church and streamed online.

Maundy Thursday marks the beginning of the Triduum, and the service includes three major liturgical actions: foot washing, Holy Eucharist; and the stripping of the Holy Table. Father Andy will preach on the ancient development of foot washing in the Christian tradition, and we shall all have the opportunity to follow our Lord’s command to wash each other’s feet.

Maundy Thursday Vigil, April 14 from 8:30 PM till Friday, April 15 @ 6:30 AM in the church

The Maundy Thursday service flows directly into the opportunity to keep vigil, as Jesus did in the garden of Gethsemane. People are invited to sign up for one of the hours of watching and praying in the church throughout the night.

Good Friday - Stations of the Cross, Friday, April 15 @ 8:30 AM in the church

The Confirmation Class will lead the journey though the traditional Stations of the Cross. Stations of the Cross is a series of images and related prayers covering events that Jesus Christ went through on the day of his crucifixion on Mount Calvary. Stations helps Christians make a spiritual connection to the suffering Christ endured on his Passion. It is typically a path of 14 numbered images arranged around the nave of a church. Worshipers stop at each station in order for specific prayers and reflections.

Good Friday Liturgy (Part II of the Triduum),April 15 @ 12 Noon to 3 PM in the church and streamed online.

This year, Trinity will offer the traditional three-hour Good Friday liturgy. The service will offer several meditations on the Passion according to St John; Anthony Rafaniello, Trinity’s Music Director, wrote the musical setting for the reproaches for the occasion and has arranged for a quartet to lead our hymns a cappella on this day as is traditional.

Paschal Vigil Liturgy (Part III of the Triduum), Saturday April 16 @ 8 PM in the church and streamed online.

From earliest times Christians have gathered on the eve of the Paschal/Easter Season to recall the story of God’s saving work, from creation through to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Paschal Vigil marks the end of the emptiness of Lent and Holy Week, and leads into the celebration of Christ’s resurrection. The Vigil Liturgy contains four main parts: The lighting of the Paschal Candle; hearing the great Hebrew stories of the faith; the Liturgy of Initiation (Baptismed); and Holy Eucharist.

Easter Sunday, The Resurrection of our Lord - April 17, one Service at 10 AM in the church and streamed online.

Easter Sunday at Trinity is always a wonderful celebration, don your Sunday best and come and proclaim our risen, conquering Lord! Father Andy will offer a children’s address on the Christian origins of Easter egg hunts after which the children will hunt the grounds for eggs. The choir anthem will be ‘Love’s Redeeming Work is Done’ and we will all have the opportunity to sing the ‘Hallelujah Chorus’ at the conclusion of the liturgy.
