📰 News we're reading

• East Orange Board Approves Custodial Outsourcing as District Cites Rising Healthcare Costs (TAPinto.net) — East Orange's school board has voted 6-1 to outsource all district custodial services starting Nov. 1, eliminating 83 in-house positions amid what officials call a severe healthcare-cost-driven budget shortfall. Leaders say they rejected big tax hikes and classroom cuts, and the contractor HES will offer custodians jobs at current schools and pay as the district plans the transition.

• East Orange company once sold radioactive water as medicine (news12.com) — Nearly a century ago, a company on Main Street in East Orange bottled and sold genuinely radioactive "Radithor" water as a cure-all, shipping it nationwide. The story traces how its aggressive health claims, a high-profile poisoning case, and federal scrutiny eventually helped push regulators to crack down on dangerous medical quackery.
