NJ Spine Surgeon, Dr. Michael Gerling, Warns of Back Injuries After Snowstorm
NJ spine surgeon warns: snow shoveling can cause serious back injuries — here's how to protect yourself this winter
As residents across New Jersey clear driveways and sidewalks after this week’s snowstorm, a local spine specialist is urging caution to avoid serious back injuries.
Dr. Michael Gerling, a board-certified spine surgeon and founder of The Gerling Spine Care and Research Institute, says snow shoveling puts significant strain on the lower back, especially when the snow is heavy and wet.
“Shoveling combines bending, lifting and twisting, which can put tremendous stress on the spine,” Gerling said. “We often see an uptick in back pain and disc injuries after major storms.”

Cold temperatures can also tighten muscles, making strains more likely. Gerling advises residents to warm up before heading outside, bend at the knees rather than the waist, avoid twisting while lifting, and take frequent breaks. Those with a history of back problems should consider using a snowblower or asking for help.
“If you experience sharp pain or numbness, that could signal a more serious spinal issue,” he said. “Taking a few precautions can prevent weeks or even months of discomfort.”
