A school bus crash on the New Jersey Turnpike left 42 people injured on Saturday, including both adults and children who reportedly were returning from a picnic, police said.

Parts of the turnpike were shut down at the East Brunswick accident site as the bus passengers were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The bus, which flipped at mile-marker 79.9 around 5:25 p.m. on the northbound side, was returning to Newark after a day at the Mayor's Family Reunion Picnic in Black Bear Lake Camp in Millstone, according to city officials.

"There was a lot of kids crying and mostly everyone that got off the bus was bleeding," Josh Keys, a witness, told nj.com. "The scene was a mess. But mostly everyone was able to walk out. Some people had to be carried out. I helped a few people out then I left because it started to get really hectic. When I left there was no police or ambulance on the scene. After driving North on the turnpike for five minutes I saw the police on the way."

This is a developing story. Patch will have more information as it comes in.
