ICE Takes Kitchen Workers From South Jersey Restaurant, Business Says

HADDONFIELD, NJ — Two kitchen workers at "El Nopalito Mexican Restaurant" were taken into custody by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on Monday, the business said on social media.

"Right now, our focus is on supporting our team, and their family members, and continuing to serve our community," owners said in a statement.

The restaurant is remaining open and may see delays in orders due to the loss of staff.

"We are overwhelmed with all the support we've received for our coworkers...we have received phone numbers to direct their family member (s) to get the help they need," the business added.

It was not immediately clear why federal agents targeted the two workers who have yet to be named.

Patch has reached out to the restaurant for more information regarding the arrests and is yet to hear back.

In speaking to ICE, a spokesperson was not able to confirm the details surrounding why the two workers were taken into custody. The agency requested additional materials that would identify them prior to further details being released.

El Nopalito, which opened in Haddonfield in September 2019, is located at 47 Kings Highway E.

According to Joana McDonnell, Communications Officer for Haddonfield, the arrests did not occur within the borough and local police was not involved.
