68-Year-Old Man Charged In Connection With East Brunswick Bank Robbery

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — A 68-year-old East Brunswick man has been arrested and charged in connection with committing a robbery at a local bank, East Brunswick Police said Friday.

Daniel McCarthy has been charged with one count of second-degree robbery and one count of second-degree attempted robbery by Toms River Police Department. McCarthy was lodged in the Ocean County Jail, where he was also charged with one count of second-degree robbery by the East Brunswick Police Department.

On Aug. 18, around 11:05 a.m., the East Brunswick Police Department responded to Columbia Bank on 389, Rt. 18 for an activated panic alarm. Before police could arrive, it was reported that a robbery had occurred, and the suspect fled the scene, authorities said.

According to initial investigation, a middle-aged white man wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt with the hood up, a medical mask, blue sunglasses, dark sweats, white shoes, holding a black Acme bag with red handles, produced a note demanding money.

The man then left the bank with approximately $150 in U.S. currency, ran to a gray Honda Odyssey mini-van parked on West Ferris Street, and fled the area, police said.

A follow-up investigation was conducted by Det. Christopher Williams, along with assistance from Toms River Police Department.

McCarthy was located at Motel 6 (244 Highway 18) along with his vehicle. Through the joint investigation, McCarthy was taken into custody without incident.
