EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — By introducing two ordinances and passing one resolution, Council on Monday took steps to ensure township roads are safer and the air cleaner for residents.

Officials are hoping these new steps would encourage employees at local businesses to use public transport while reducing their carbon footprint.

Council passed a resolution establishing a bus stop along Edgeboro Road, of the easterly curb line of Connerty Court. This stop will ferry workers to businesses located on Edgeboro Road.

Among the two ordinances introduced, one imposes parking restrictions on the entire length of Edgeboro Road and the other looks to add a mid-block crosswalk to ensure pedestrian safety.

The township has been noticing a lot of tractor-trailers parked along the road. The local police department recommended that officials impose parking restrictions to make the road safer for transportation, Township Administrator Joe Criscuolo said.

The second ordinance seeks to establish a mid-street crosswalk so that when businesses start using mass transit to bring employees to work, they can cross the road safely after alighting by using the crosswalk.

According to the mayor, the resolution and two ordinances are in keeping with the township’s sustainable planet efforts.

“We want to try to get employees here, many of whom can’t drive, some who can drive but would like the option for utilizing public transportation, as it would be cheaper and better for the planet,” Cohen said.

Cohen said that businesses along Edgeboro Road have been having staffing issues, and hopefully these few steps could help attract more workers.

The public hearing on the two ordinances will be held on Jan. 23
