East Brunswick PD Warns Residents Of Tax Scam

Scammers are attempting to lure residents into paying a fake tax debt, the Police Department said.

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — The East Brunswick Police Department is warning residents of an ongoing tax scam.

Scammers are calling unsuspecting residents claiming they owe taxes that must be paid using a pre-paid debit card, money order or a wire transfer.

Here are some signs to look for when you receive a suspicious call:

  • The IRS will not call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. Generally, the IRS will first mail a bill to any taxpayer who owes taxes.
  • Scammers usually threaten to immediately bring in local police or other law enforcement groups to have the taxpayer arrested for not paying.
  • They demand that taxes be paid without giving taxpayers the opportunity to question or appeal the amount owed.
  • Scammers will often call out of the blue about an unexpected tax refund.
