East Brunswick Reorganization: Spadafino Resigns From Council

"Difficult" but "personal" decision said Michael Spadafino. Council also elected a new president.

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ – Councilman Michael Spadafino resigned from his position on Council and all township committees during Tuesday’s reorganization meeting.

“This decision is very difficult for me, but very personal,” Spadafino said. “I want to thank the residents of East Brunswick for the trust and faith they gave me over these years as an elected official.”

Spadafino thanked all Council members said they were friends first and then colleagues. “With friends, you may disagree but you always respect the opinion of the other person. It was an honor and pleasure to serve with you all on this council,” he said.

Mayor Brad Cohen thanked Spadafino and his wife Cathy for their years of dedicated service to the Township. "They come to public service from the point of having contributed to this Township in extraordinarily meaningful ways.

A chiropractor by profession, Spadafino served on Council for over seven years. His Council seat is now open and the Democratic Party will be responsible for choosing a nominee to fill the vacancy.

During the meeting, Jim Wendell was unanimously elected Council President for the term of one year. He was nominated by Kevin McEvoy

“Having known Jim for quite some time now, I feel comfortable and confident that he will be able to lead this council as we embark on new challenges that face our community today and throughout the new year,” McEvoy said. Wendell will take over from Sharon Sullivan.

Meanwhile, McEvoy was re-elected to serve as Council vice president for another term.
