EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - East Brunswick public schools were placed in a brief "shelter in place" Wednesday afternoon, the superintendent's office confirmed, but as of 4 p.m. it has been lifted.

"Due to a police investigation in the East Brunswick Square Mall area, we put five of the schools near the mall into 'shelter in place' mode," said Dr. Victor Valeski, Superintendent of Schools. East Brunswick High School, Hammarskjold, Central, Irwin and Chittick schools were put in "shelter in place" mode around 3:15 and it was lifted by 4 p.m.

"One problem we had was some of the schools were already doing dismissal," he said. "Students getting on buses or getting picked up were allowed to leave, but our walking students were retained inside until we were told it was safe."
