East Brunswick: Two Students Report ‘Close Contacts’ With COVID

The high school students have been moved to virtual learning for the next 14 days.

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — Two high school students from East Brunswick Public Schools reported “close contacts” with people testing positive of COVID-19 outside of school, the district said Sep.11. Both students self-reported.

This comes days after multiple students from the district were in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. Read More Here: East Brunswick: Students Had 'Close Contacts' With COVID-19

The students attended class on Sep. 8 and 9 as part of the hybrid learning structure that East Brunswick established. All staff who were in contact with the students were notified, said Superintendent Victor Valeski. The students have been moved to virtual learning for the next 14 days of their quarantine period, the district informed.

“We believe the risk in these cases are minimal but we treat each case like these with the highest degree of caution. Again, there is no report of any student testing positive for COVID-19. These are two independent self-reported close contacts,” Valeski told the school community in a statement.

According to the CDC, close contact is defined as being less than six feet from a person testing positive for COVID-19 for 15 minutes or longer.

East Brunswick is one of the few school districts to adopt the hybrid model this school year.

Valeski told parents and guardians that the district's self-reporting systems is “working” and it helps them keep the school district population safer. “This directly impacts our ability to begin to consolidate cohorts and bring more students into schools when state guidance and science permits us to do so,” he said.
