East Brunswick's Blue Envelope Program Aims To Help Drivers With Autism
The program gives officers instant cues to adjust how they communicate with drivers on the autism spectrum.
EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — April is Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month, and the East Brunswick Police Department is highlighting a program designed to help officers better communicate with autistic drivers during traffic stops.
The department has partnered with the Middlesex County Association of Chiefs of Police on the Blue Envelope Program, an initiative that provides autistic drivers with a blue envelope to store their driver's license, registration, and insurance information.
The envelope also includes a notice informing officers that the driver is on the autism spectrum, along with communication tips aimed at reducing misunderstandings.

The program targets four key goals:
- Enhancing understanding: The envelope gives officers immediate information about autism, promoting empathy and patience during interactions.
- Reducing anxiety: Traffic stops can be particularly stressful for autistic individuals. The blue envelope serves as a visual cue that helps officers adjust their communication style.
- Streamlining communication: Practical tips printed on the envelope help officers communicate more effectively in high-stress situations.
- Encouraging preparedness: The envelope helps autistic drivers and their families feel more confident and secure during traffic stops by keeping essential documents organized and ready to present.
Residents can pick up a free Blue Envelope at East Brunswick Police Headquarters, 1 Jean Walling Civic Center Drive.
