SOUTH RIVER, NJ — An employee at the South River Wawa tested positive Friday evening for coronavirus, and the store was immediately closed, according to South River police.

However, the store has since been sanitized and re-opened with staffing from nearby Wawa locations.

On Friday evening, managers at the South River Wawa (656 Old Bridge Turnpike) were notified that a store employee had tested positive for coronavirus (covid-19). The store was immediately closed so the premises could be thoroughly cleaned, sanitized and disinfected by a professional company, said South River police.

In addition, all opened or exposed food was discarded.

Wawa management worked with the Department of Health to determine which other employees were in contact with the infected employee. Those employees are now quarantining for fourteen days.

With approval from the Board of Health, the store has been allowed to reopen with staffing from nearby Wawa locations, said police.

Because the employee is not a South River resident, neither the South River police department nor the borough of South River was notified of the positive test result.

"In order to clear up some misconceptions, we'd like to make residents aware that neither the South River Police Department nor the borough of South River receive information that identifies the place of employment, previous whereabouts, or previous movements of individuals who test positive for covid-19," said police. "Notifications to any workplaces, businesses, or individuals who infected persons may have had contact with is done by the Department of Health."

Police said it was the Wawa that let them know about this positive employee.
