Massive Blaze Destroys Businesses, Apartments In South River

The fire started on Sunday morning and was extinguished in the afternoon after multiple crews battled the blaze.

SOUTH RIVER, NJ — A massive fire ripped through a local building in South River’s busy main street on Sunday.

The building housed local businesses and apartments on the second floor.

A three-alarm fire broke out Sunday morning just before 10 a.m. Mayor John Krenzel asked residents to stay away from the area are multiple fire crews worked to get the blaze under control.

Fire crews from Metuchen, Milltown, East Brunswick and others responded. The Milltown Rescue Squad provided rehab services alongside North Brunswick First Aid & Rescue Squad, for just under 5 hours.

The fire was brought under control Sunday afternoon and no injuries were reported. According to media reports, the Red Cross was helping displaced families with food and lodging.

Due to the use of fire hydrants, area residents experienced low water pressure and discolored water on Sunday.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
