This Middlesex County Town Is Among The Safest In NJ
According to the study, property crime in the borough decreased 84% over the past two years.
MIDDLESEX COUNTY, NJ — South River ranked as the third-safest city in New Jersey, jumping 15 spots from last year's rankings, according to a new study from Safewise.
The Middlesex County borough of 16,237 residents reported 0.5 violent crimes per 1,000 people and 1.0 property crimes per 1,000 people in 2026, the study found. Property crime in South River has decreased 84 percent over the past two years.
“This achievement is a direct result of the hard work and professionalism of our officers”, said Police Chief Mark Tinitigan. “Every division in this department plays a critical role in keeping our community safe, and I could not be prouder of their dedication.”

Safewise's annual rankings examine crime rates across the country "to highlight cities with low per capita crime and ignite conversation and action around how to make all cities and communities safer."
Vernon Township held the top spot in New Jersey for the third consecutive year, followed by Bernards Township in second place for the third year in a row.

New Jersey had the seventh-lowest violent crime rate nationwide at 2.46 incidents per 1,000 people, below the national average of 4.43. The state's property crime rate of 15.88 incidents per 1,000 people was the fifth-lowest in the country and half the national rate of 22.89.
Five cities saw decreases in violent crime, including South River, Vernon Township, Barnegat Township, Dumont and Hopatcong. Barnegat Township also saw an 81% decrease in property crime over two years.
None of the 10 safest cities reported murders. Eighty percent reported no rapes, and 60% reported no robberies.
The study found 49% of New Jersey residents use security cameras to protect their property, while 26% use security systems.
