Police ID Man Who Died After Losing Control Driving Along Metropolis Drive

Police say Gerardo Martinez Gonzalez, 30, was driving at a high rate of speed when he lost control, hitting a guardrail and then a pole.

AUSTIN, TX -- Police on Friday identified the driver killed in a wreck attributable to a high rate of speed earlier in the week.

Gerardo Martinez Gonzalez, 30, died in the 6700 block of Metropolis Drive Oct. 12 as he drove a black 2010 Ford F-150 southbound at a high rate of speed. Police said Gonzalez failed to negotiate a right curve in the road when the vehicle struck a guardrail and then utility pole along the east curb line.

Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police continue to investigate the incident. Those with information are urged to call the APD Vehicular Homicide Unit Detectives at (512) 974-4424. Tips also can be submitted by downloading APD’s mobile app, Austin PD, for free on iPhone and Android.

The accident was Austin’s 54th fatal traffic crash and the 55th fatality of 2016, police said. At this time in 2015, there were 82 traffic fatalities in Austin, police added.
