Rutgers Soccer Player No. 34 Among Top 100 Freshmen Nationally

Voorhees resident and Eastern Regional High School graduate Madison Tiernan has been identified as a freshman who has made significant contributions to her college’s soccer team as a member of Topdrawersoccer.com’s midseason Freshmen Women’s Top 100.

She is ranked No. 34.

The Rutgers University freshman is third on the team in goals with six, and leads the team with five assists, according to scarletknights.com.

Her most recent goal came in Rutgers’ 2-2 tie against South Florida on Sunday. She and junior forward Stef Scholz had tallies for the Scarlet Knights. South Florida tied the game in the 82nd minute to send it into overtime.

Senior goalie Jess Janosz made two saves and allowed no goals. Sophomore Alana Jimenez made four saves and allowed both goals.

On Friday, Tiernan provided the assist on Erica Skroski’s goal in a 2-1 loss to Central Florida. It was the second consecutive game in which Skroski scored a goal, after going scoreless in 33 games to start her career, according to scarletknights.com.

Tiernan was named American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week on Sept. 16, and was named to the conference honor roll on Aug. 26. She is the first true freshman since Rheanne Sleiman in 2007 to score a goal in her first match, according to scarletknights.com.

Rutgers is now 11-3-2 overall and 4-2-1 in American Athletic Conference play.

The team is currently ranked No. 22 in the NCAA RPI.

FIELD HOCKEY EDGES INDIANA: Sophomore Katie Champion, of Egg Harbor Township, scored with one minute, 14 seconds left in the game to give the Rutgers field hockey team a 1-0 win over Indiana on Sunday. 

The goal was Champion’s fourth of the season. She also has an assist.

Rutgers is now 9-6 this season, and 3-0-1 all-time against the Hoosiers, according to scarletknights.com.

THAT’S A WHOLE LOT OF SOCCER: The Rutgers men’s soccer team went into double overtime twice last week, dropping a 1-0 decision to Bucknell and battling to a 0-0 draw with South Florida, according to scarletknights.com.

Goalie David Greczek stopped four shots in the loss to Bucknell, and a career-high 11 saves against South Florida. Six of those 11 saves came in overtime, according to scarletknights.com.

Because of his effort, Grezcek was named American Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Week on Monday, according to the University.

Rutgers has now played in four overtime games this season, and is 0-2-2 in those games. The Scarlet Knights are 5-8-2 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play with two conference games left this season.
