Proceeds from Spa Week will support The Auxiliary of RWJ’s $1.5 million dollar commitment to the patients at RWJ New Brunswick for the purchase and installation of the Skylight Care Navigator System. CareNavigator transforms televisions in patient rooms into a robust and seamless interactive system. The system provides interactive patient systems supporting the continuum of a patient’s “journey of care” before, during and after the hospital stay.

For most individuals, a hospital stay is an unexpected, life-changing event that can evoke anxiety and fear. At RWJ, CareNavigator helps our team of faculty and community physicians, nurses, allied health professionals and employees provide a measure of comfort and convenience to ease the potential stress of a hospital visit.

In August of 2013, RWJ installed 1,023 brand new LED HDTVs with custom pillow speaker control and a Skylight Interactive Patient Computer connected to each HDTV in patient rooms and lounges throughout the main hospital and children’s hospital.

“Patients are able to make real-time requests from environmental services, engineering and even Pastoral Care, so their needs are met immediately,” says Joanne Arico, Director of Patient Engagement at RWJUH. “Reception problems have been eliminated, patients can watch movies they prefer and we are able provide more patient education videos, which our patients are able to view at their convenience during their stay.”

The advanced technology allows patients to view the latest on-demand Hollywood movie releases, play interactive games, access a library of relaxation videos and view hospital orientation and educational videos that address a patient’s specific diagnosis or treatment plan. More important, the new interactive system provides patients with the comfort of their favorite television programs, the latest entertainment and movies, games and educational programs to make their hospital stay less stressful and more enjoyable.

Other features include:

• 68 cable television channels

• E-mail access

• Games for kids

• Ability to order meals via the television

• Select hospital services can be requested via the television

• All channels are available in Spanish

The Auxiliary of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital is an independent 501c3 non-profit volunteer organization whose mission is to support and promote the programs and resources of RWJUH through fundraising, community outreach, education and services.
