On Bike Safety Month, Mercer County Sheriff Shares Some Safety Tips
To help spread awareness, Sheriff Jack Kemler shares some tips for bicyclists.
MERCER COUNTY, NJ — May is bicycle safety month, and with the weather being all pleasant, many bicyclists will be out and about.
While it can be an inexpensive and reliable way to get around town, bicycling can also prove to be dangerous.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, there were 938 bicyclist fatalities in the country in 2020, which accounted for 2.4 percent of all traffic fatalities during the year.

To help spread awareness of bike safety, Mercer County Sheriff Jack Kemler has shared some tips for bicyclists and motorists:
- Give your bike a thorough safety check at the beginning of the season.
- Obey all stop and yield signs, traffic lights, and lane markings when cycling.
- Look before you change lanes or signal your turns to others.
- Wear bright clothing to be more visible and use reflectors and lights at night in both the front and rear of your bike.
- Safely share the road with other cyclists and vehicles.
- Most importantly, wear a helmet everywhere and every time. Parents should set an example when it comes to helmet use.
