BOOST YOUR CHILD'S CHANCE OF GROWING UP HEALTHY
New Rutgers project helps parents reshape their households to keep kids healthier and safer.

New Brunswick, NJ, September 25, 2014– A new project launched by Rutgers aims to help parents creates healthier, happier, safer homes and lifestyles. “Parents have so many time and budget pressures these days, it makes it a challenge to be sure their kids have what they need to grow up healthy. We spent thousands of hours surveying, observing, and talking to parents across New Jersey to find out what we could do to help them do an even better job raising their kids”, says Carol Byrd-Bredbenner, Rutgers Professor. “We used all this information to create the new HomeStyles program.”
HomeStyles is an online program that gives parents quick, fun, and no-cost ideas to help them make small, simple changes at home. Byrd-Bredbenner reports that “the guides have been getting rave reviews from parents—they tell us how fast and easy it is to use them to help their families. Plus, they like that it is online and available anytime of the day or night.”
Byrd-Bredbenner’s team at Rutgers is signing up families with young children to participate in this exciting program. Families receive program guides with quick tips and fun ideas that help them make small, simple changes at home that help kids grow up healthier and safer. “Parents know their families best—so they chose the guides that will help their families the most—maybe they want to have tantrum-free family meals or swap out sugary beverages or set a bedtime and stick to it,” says Byrd-Bredbenner. There is no charge to participate and families also receive small gifts that will help them re-shape their households for better health. There are even opportunities for parents to earn money by completing surveys along the way.
