Cranbury Police Warn of Scams

The urges all residents, businesses owners, and the general public to report suspicious activity immediately to the Cranbury Township Police dispatcher at 609-395-0031. Since the summer months are here, the area sometimes encounters an increase in “gypsy” construction or remodeling scams. In addition, other ruses include “cleaning people” entering homes and businesses and when challenged, claim that they are at the “wrong address.”

"Gypsy" workers often pose as repair people who pave driveways, repair chimneys, and perform remodeling or repair work. Sometimes, they demand money up front and do not return. Other times, they do inferior work for a full price, vowing when confronted to return and “make it right” but then fail to come back to the house or business. Often, they are savvy in conducting just enough work to have a complaint be a civil not criminal matter.

Always investigate the business with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Ask to inspect and record proper documentation which allows the person to be later found in the event of a problem. Sometimes, these "gypsies" will even offer “references” from neighbors. Use companies that have a documented history free of complaints with the BBB or the New Jersey Consumer Protection Agency.

When someone “accidentally” enters you home or business, you should be alarmed. Many types of “diversion” burglaries use this method. The homeowner or business manager is distracted at one point while others, who are even unknown to be inside, rifle through bedroom drawers for jewelry, cash, and valuables in a home or secluded offices in a business. They too will have a “preplanned” excuse.

In both instances, call the immediately. Do not confront the suspects. Carefully observe descriptions, including vehicle models and license plate registrations.
